PGD/PGS

PGD

What is PGD/PGS?

PGD, PGS, and ERA are advanced techniques used in conjunction with In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to improve the chances of successful pregnancy and reduce the risk of certain complications.

PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis)
  • Purpose: To identify embryos with specific genetic abnormalities before they are transferred to the uterus.
  • How it works: A small number of cells are removed from the embryo (biopsy), and genetic testing is performed to detect specific genetic disorders, such as single-gene disorders (cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia), chromosomal abnormalities (Down syndrome), or sex-linked disorders.
  • Who is it for: Couples with a known family history of genetic disorders, couples who have previously had a child with a genetic disorder, and individuals with chromosomal abnormalities.
PGS (Preimplantation Genetic Screening)
  • Purpose: To screen embryos for chromosomal abnormalities, such as having too many or too few chromosomes (aneuploidy).
  • How it works: Similar to PGD, a biopsy is performed on the embryo, and the cells are analyzed for chromosomal abnormalities.
  • Who is it for:
    • Women of advanced maternal age (over 35)
    • Couples with a history of recurrent pregnancy loss
    • Couples with repeated IVF failures
    • Couples with severe male factor infertility
ERA (Endometrial Receptivity Array)
  • Purpose: To determine the optimal window of implantation for each individual woman.
  • How it works: A small sample of the uterine lining is taken a few days before the expected time of embryo transfer. The sample is then analyzed to assess the expression of genes related to endometrial receptivity. This helps identify the specific days when the uterus is most receptive to embryo implantation.
  • Who is it for:
    • Women with recurrent implantation failure
    • Women with recurrent pregnancy loss

Fertility Assessment is a series of medical evaluations designed to uncover the underlying causes of difficulty conceiving. These tests help pinpoint specific issues in both partners, guiding your doctor towards the most effective treatment plan.

If you and your partner have been actively trying to conceive for over a year (or six months if you're over 35) without success, it's time to consult a fertility specialist.

Common tests include:
Semen Analysis: For men, this evaluates sperm count, motility, and shape.
Ovarian Reserve Tests: For women, these assess egg quality and quantity.
Hormone Assessments: To check hormone levels crucial for reproduction in both partners.
Imaging Tests: Such as ultrasounds to examine reproductive organs.

Duration: The testing process can vary depending on the specific tests and your individual situation.
Comfort: Most tests are minimally invasive and relatively comfortable.

Yes, in most cases, you can continue trying to conceive. Your doctor may provide guidance on lifestyle or other factors that could improve your chances.

Results Review: Your doctor will review the results with you and discuss the findings.
